Bee's flight home
The painting depicts the flight of the first endangered species of bumblebee home. The bouquet of picked flowers symbolises the destruction of its home, causing the reduction in its population.
The rusty patched bumblebee (Bombus affinis) is the first bumblebee species to be listed as endangered. The species is endemic to North America and although once a common sight, its population has reduced by 90% due to reduction in habitat, pesticides and disease. Dietary stress due to insufficient floral resources is believed to reduce the bee’s resiliency to pathogens and pesticides, linking to the bouquet of picked flowers. A recovery plan for this bumblebee has been formulated by the US Fish and Wildlife Service in 2021.
Original oil painting on canvas, 30 x 40cm. Hand signed and varnished.
